Spain on two wheels

Spain runs more segway tours than anywhere else. Pick your kind of Spanish hour.

Gothic lanes in Barcelona, the sand paths of the Retiro, a Malaga seafront at dusk, an hour with a lesson in Valencia. Four kinds of Spanish ride, what each costs to board, and which city each one suits.

Where riders go

Six cities that put a segway under nearly every visitor.

The places with the deepest choice: a Catalan waterfront, Madrid parkland, the Danube embankments, two riverbanks in Paris and Prague, and Valencia’s white curves.

City rides

A city tour where you cover four times the ground.

Two hours, a helmet, a guide and the whole centre rather than one corner of it. This is the biggest group of rides on the site and where most first-timers begin, because a segway turns a full day of walking into a morning.

Every city ride
Barcelona

Barcelona: the seafront is flat, the Gothic Quarter is not.

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 680 riders on the most-booked Barcelona ride

The Barceloneta boardwalk and the Port Olimpic run are easy rolling on smooth concrete. The Barri Gotic is tight and cobbled, which is exactly why a guide who knows which lanes are rideable earns the fee.

The default booking

Two hours, the whole centre

2 hours· guided· from $35

One loop taking in the Ciutadella, the marina and the edge of the old town. It is the ride nearly everyone books first, and the one with the most riders behind it.

The easy option

Barceloneta and the port

1 to 2 hours· flat throughout· from $20

Boardwalk, beach and the Olympic marina, all on level ground. If anyone in the group is nervous about the machine, this is the route that settles them.

The cobbled one

Old lanes, cobbles and all

2 hours· small groups· from $34

Spanish old towns are shaded, car-free and hard on feet. Rolling through them is the single best case for the machine, and the groups stay small because the lanes are narrow.

What it costs

What an hour on a segway actually costs.

Every ride on the site grouped by price. A short city lap comes in under the price of a museum ticket in most of these places.

Under $50

Short city laps, taster hours and park circuits, mostly in Spain, Hungary and Poland.

$50 to $150

The standard two-hour guided city ride, and the coastal and off-road routes that need a transfer.

$150 and up

Private guides, half-day routes and the island runs that come with a boat or a ferry.

Before you book

Weight limits, minimum ages and the shoes you turn up in.

Every operator sets a rider weight floor and ceiling and a minimum age, and both vary by city, so check them before you pay for a family. Closed shoes are standard, a helmet normally comes with the machine, and the first stretch of any ride is a lesson on flat ground. Rain rarely stops a tour. Ice does.

Only on two wheels

Three rides that would be a slog on foot.

A walking tour covers a few streets. A bike tour asks you to pedal. These are the routes where the machine is the reason the day works at all.

The first ten minutes

The taster hour

Every operator starts the same way: flat ground, no traffic, and a few minutes of leaning forward and back until the machine stops feeling like it is about to leave without you. A taster ride is mostly that lesson plus a short loop, which is why it is the cheapest thing on the site and the right first booking for anyone who has never stood on one.

Off the pavement

Off-road and nature routes

The fat-tyre machines handle gravel, packed sand and forest track, which opens up dunes, vineyard lanes and lakeside paths no city tour reaches. Groups are smaller, the briefing is longer, and the ride usually starts with a transfer out of town rather than a meeting point on a square.

A lap of the island

Island rides

Small islands are the ideal shape for this: one coast road, a couple of beaches and a lighthouse, too far to walk and too short to justify a car. Rottnest, Malta and the Canaries all sell the same loop, and on most of them the machines are the only vehicle visitors are allowed to use.

After dark

Cities light their monuments and empty their pavements at the same hour.

Evening rides swap daytime heat and foot traffic for lit facades and clear ground. Paris runs its route along the river with the tower on the hour, Madrid and Barcelona wait for the plazas to cool, and the machines carry their own lights.

Every after-dark ride →
Old towns

Old towns were built for feet, and they punish them.

Medieval centres make the best case for the machine: short distances, no cars, and cobbles that turn a walking tour into an endurance test. Krakow, Prague, Savannah and half of Andalusia all sell the same shaded two hours.
